What characterize the NorDig specifications?
To achieve the strategic goals of the NorDig organisation there
was a need to establish a set of common specifications, both for
the receive side (IRD specifications), the transmit side (common
Rules of Operation) and for compliance testing (Test Specifications).
The NorDig specifications refer to minimum requirements for the
various functionality profiles (see figure 1), which are all based
on relevant DVB specifications.
The NorDig Basic TV profile corresponds to basic
requirements for digital broadcasting, services that do not depend
on enhancements by applications or interaction. This profile is
a subset of the Enhanced Profile.
The NorDig Enhanced profile covers the NorDig requirements
for enhanced services that do not depend on an interaction channel,
but depend on a standardised API, based on the DVB-MHP 1.1
Enhanced Broadcast Profile. The Enhanced profile is a subset of
the Interactive profile.
The NorDig Interactive profile (NorDig II) covers
the NorDig requirements for interactive services, including a standardised
API, based on the DVB-MHP 1.1 Interactive Broadcast Profile.
The Internet Access profile includes the NorDig Interactive profile
as a subset.
The NorDig Internet Access profile covers the NorDig
requirements for interactive services that depend on a standardised
Internet access, based on the DVB-MHP 1.1 Internet Access profile.
The Internet Access profile includes the NorDig Interactive profile
as a subset.
The NorDig specifications cover services that are coded in accordance
with DVB/MPEG, and adapted for transmission in cable, satellite
and terrestrial broadcast networks, while corresponding requirements
for IP-based networks are under preparation.
The NorDig specifications are established with the aim that IRDs
in the Nordic market shall satisfy a common set of minimum requirements,
independent of operator/service provider and transmission media,
and allow multi-operator use of the IRD.

What are the NorDig-Unified Requirements?
The unified NorDig specification includes the four profiles; Basic
TV, Enhanced, Interactive and
Internet Access, in addition to the initial
NorDig I profile.
Specifications for profiles NorDig I and NorDig II have
been issued earlier, while profiles Basic TV, Enhanced
and Internet Access are new.
The unified specification includes the old NorDig II and NorDig I
specifications as separate profiles NorDig Interactive (or
NorDig II) and NorDig I respectively.
The unified specification text relates to all profiles unless otherwise
indicated. Some new requirements have been introduced into the NorDig I
and NorDig II specifications, representing an update with reference
to earlier versions of these specifications. Some of these and some
optional requirements will be mandatory after a grace period, as
indicated in the specification text. Some previous mandatory requirements
for NorDig I and II have been relaxed, partly due to experience
from testing of IRDs, but mainly in order to keep the same minimum
requirements for non-interactive services as for the Basic TV profile.
The specifications of the NorDig IRDs are divided into two parts:
| Part A: |
Hardware and firmware |
Part B: |
The Software system and Application Programming Interfaces
(API) as relevant. |

What is the NorDig Basic Specification?
The NorDig Basic specification is a sub-set of the NorDig Unified
specification, including only requirements that are relevant for
the NorDig Basic TV profile. Up
What are the NorDig Rules of Operation?
The NorDig Rules of Operation specifies the use of some transmit
parameters in order to ensure that they are used in a common way,
independent of operator and media. The common rules are established
to simplify the implementation of IRDs, especially for cases when
independent operators broadcast to the same IRD (in the same network). Up
What are the NorDig Test Specifications?
The NorDig Test specifications are established in order to ensure
compliance with the NorDig specifications. The compliance testing
is based on self-testing by the IRD manufacturer. The testing is
based on the DVM-MHP Test Suites for the API-part, for IRDs equipped
with a standard API. Up
What about the NorDig I and NorDig
II specifications?
The NorDig Unified specification includes the latest updates of
the older NorDig I and NorDig II specifications.
The NorDig I specification was first issued in 1998 when the
common DVB API solution had not taken specific direction and based
on the technical status of that time. The last updated version,
version 1.4, is incorporated in the NorDig Unified specification.
The latest version is relaxed on some items, referred to the earlier
version 1.3. The specification text is also modified on some items,
in order obtain better harmonisation with the text for the corresponding
requirement for NorDig II (NorDig Interactive).
The NorDig I profile covers the NorDig requirements
for services that do not depend on a standardised application interface
and a mandatory interaction channel. It is the intention of the
NorDig members to migrate interactive services from the NorDig I
to the NorDig Interactive (NorDig II) profile in order to achieve
a common standardised API for the interactive services in networks
controlled by the NorDig members.
NorDig I (NorDig Interactive)
The NorDig II specification was first issued in 2000 and added
some hardware and software requirements mainly to include a standard
API, as specified for the DVB MHP Interactive Broadcast profile.
The latest updated version, NorDig II version 1.1, is included
in the NorDig Unified specification and is identical to the profile
named NorDig Interactive.
Some new requirements are introduced into the latest version (version
1.1) of the NorDig II specifications. Some of these and some
optional requirements will be increased to mandatory after a grace
period, as indicated in the specification text. These enhancements
are introduced as a result of some years’ operational experience.
Some previous mandatory requirements for NorDig II have been
relaxed, partly due to experience from testing of IRDs, but mainly
in order to keep the same minimum requirements for non-interactive
services as for the Basic TV profile. Up
